Post-operative instructions after root canal retreatment
- Rest and avoid intense activities during the rest of the day
- When the effects of anaesthesia disappear, the tissues that surround and support the tooth will remain inflammated. Thus a moderate pain may be felt during a period of 1-2 weeks after carrying out the endodontic treatment. This pain will vary in intensity depending on the treated tooth and each patient. Normally it is a moderate pain, that will increase with mastication. It could be controlled through medication. Pain appears because tissues surrounding and supporting the tooth will keep inflammated after root canal treatment. It is not the "nerve" that harms, as it does not exist any more. Some mastication discomfort may remain during 3 months.
- There are situations where intense pain symptoms and suppuration appear. In spite of it, the prognosis of the root canal retreatment is usually good. Follow the post-operative medication protocol suggested by our department.
- Avoid to chew with the treated tooth until your dentist has made the definitive restoration.
