The dental pulp

It is a soft and fibrous tissue, containing many blood vessels and nerves (very sensitive), formed by connective cells.

It is located in the interior of the tooth, occupying the interior of the corona and the roots.

It is responsible for:

• The dentin's formation
• Protecting the tooth giving sensitiveness to the dentin ( the nervous fibres in the interior of the dentin's tubules arise from the pulp)

Those teeth that have no caries, periodontal disease or which do not suffer from any dental trauma have a healthy pulp.

When the pulp gets ill through bacterias (caries, periodontal disease) or trauma, a pulpitis occurs. If it is irreversible a endodontic treatment must be made (root canal treatment procedure).
