Root canal treatment

Imagine a healthy tooth, without caries and a living pulp. The pulp is normally called "nerve". If the tooth suffers from caries that is not treated and it spreads to the pulp a pulpitis occurs. That is an infection of the pulp. This pulpitis could also spread to the bone causing aa apical periodontitis.

In this case, if we want to maintain the tooth, we need to carry out a root canal treatment that consists of eliminating the caries and creating a direct access to the ill dental pulp. With the help of some tools called files we will clean up the infected tissue inside the tooth, and once the caries is eliminated, the remaining hole will be filled with a material called guttapercha.

That ends the root canal treatment, but after the tooth must be reconstructed in order to recover its function and anatomy.

Once the root canal treament is finished the bone's injure will disappear bit by bit, restablishing the normal process.

¿Does a root canal treatment hurt?

The treatment using a correct anaesthesic technique is totally painless.

In some cases during the post-operative treatment some sensitiveness can appear during 1 or 2 weeks, that could increase with mastication. It happens because tissues that surround and support the tooth will become inflammated after treatment. Therefore it is very important to take the prescripted medication.

¿How much does a root canal treatment last?

Normally it takes one session of 1 hour approximately.

Success probabilities of root canal treatment

It depends on the capacity of:

  • Cleaning up the tissues
  • Sealing the canals permanently

¿If root canal treatment fails?

If a root canal treatment fails, a root canal retreatment should be performed.

¿Why is a canal treament made?

In most cases it is made because of deep caries that provoke a pulpitis.

If a tooth with an irreversible pulpitis is not treated by means of a root canal treatment, the infection will spread producing an apical periodontits, that will harm those tissues that support the tooth (alveolar bone and periodontal ligament).
