Root canal retreatment procedureImagine a reconstructed tooth, in which a root canal treatment has been carried out. Therefore it has no pulp, what people usually call the nerve. As time passes, bacterias that are in the mouth could get into the reconstruction infecting the material that has been used to fill the space that the pulp formerly occupied. So, if these bacterias are not eliminated they could spread to the bone and produce an apical periodontitis. In this case, if we want to maintain the tooth, we need to make a root canal retreatment that consists of creating a direct access to the infected filling material. With the help of some tools called files we will clean up the filling inside the tooth. Once it is eliminated the hole that remains would be filled with a material called guttapercha. That ends the root canal retreatment, but after the tooth must be reconstructed in order to recover its function and anatomy. Once the canal treament is finished the bone's injury will disappear bit by bit, restablishing the normal process. |
